Nella C. Delva, Ph.D.

Nella C. Delva is a dedicated neuroscientist and Fulbright Scholar with a vibrant multicultural heritage rooted in Haiti and nurtured in Florida, USA. Her academic journey and research are driven by a profound commitment to understanding the neurobiology of neuropsychological disorders. This passion stems from her personal experiences growing up in Haiti and her desire to address the global impact of neuros.
Nella is currently advancing her research at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany. Her work specifically focuses on the molecular and cellular pathways that underlie neuropsychological conditions, aiming to uncover new therapeutic targets.
Beyond the lab, Nella is an advocate for mental health awareness and the importance of a balanced work-life environment, especially in the demanding field of scientific research. Her blog, STEM-azing.com, reflects her journey and thoughts on science, research, and life as a scientist with a rich cultural background.
Her academic credentials, coupled with her leadership qualities and her role as a mentor, highlight her commitment not only to her research but also to inspiring the next generation of scientists. Nella's story is one of resilience, passion, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge, making her a distinguished figure in the scientific community and an inspiring role model.
My Story
During my Ph.D training at Florida State University, I delved into understanding the neurodevelopment of neuropsychiatric disorders, before my venture to Berlin on a Fulbright scholarship. Here at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, I am expanding my research to explore the mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders, for a pre-translational perspective. My work aims not just to advance scientific knowledge but to forge pathways toward better therapeutic strategies.
Throughout my academic and professional journey, I've faced challenges that have tested my resilience—transitioning cultures, navigating the competitive world of academia, and managing the pressures of research. These experiences have taught me the importance of a balanced work-life philosophy. This perspective has reshaped my approach to science and life, emphasizing well-being as integral to sustained success.
My blog, STEM-azing.com, is a platform where I share these experiences, offering a glimpse into the life of a scientist who bridges diverse cultures and champions mental health. Through my story, I hope to inspire others, especially young women and immigrants, to pursue their passions in STEM, reminding them that resilience and persistence can overcome the greatest of challenges.
Join me as I continue to explore the mysteries of the human brain, advocate for mental health, and strive to make a difference in the world, one discovery at a time.
